The first week of June is Recycle Week and is focusing on encouraging us to recycle the most frequently forgotten household products. The event is bring promoted by television presenter Gail Porter, who will give interviews around the UK to highlight the environmental benefits if everyone was to recycle "just one more" item of household waste. In particular, the campaign reveals the effects on carbon footprint if we recycle often overlooked household items such as aerosols, plastic shampoo bottles and cleaning products containers. Research undertaken by WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) has highlighted a series of ‘hotspots’ in the home of ‘forgotten’ items of recyclable household waste.
• 62% of consumers recycle household items from their kitchen
• only 36% and 34% respectively remember to recycle items from their bathroom and bedroom
• 41% of people throwaway recyclable items from the bathroom
• nearly 850,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent saved – the same as taking over a quarter of a million cars off the road each year - if every household recycled ‘one more thing’
